Barça and Spain Clash Over Lamine Yamal's Injury

Updated: Sep 29

The Situation

Over the past two years, Barça winger Lamine Yamal has quickly become a star player for both FC Barcelona and the Spanish National Team. As of late, his injury worries have put him in the spotlight.

During the most recent international break, Yamal featured in both of Spain's World Cup Qualifying matches. Across both of these games, (vs. Türkiye and Bulgaria) he played a total of 152 minutes and provided 3 assists (Sofascore). While Yamal's performances were impressive, concerns regarding his health began to spring up almost immediately. It was reported that the teenage sensation had skipped training sessions with the Spanish National Team as a result of discomfort in his groin and back. Despite this, Luis De La Fuente (head manager of the Spanish National Team) still opted to field the player for an extended duration of time across both games. Shockingly, it was later reported that Lamine Yamal was given pain-killers to manage his discomfort whilst playing (Goal).

Upon his return to Barcelona, medical staff confirmed that he was struggling with pain in his back and groin area. Consequently, he is being ruled out for Barça's upcoming clash against Valencia on September 14th and is a major doubt for Barça's trip to Newcastle for their Champions League opener on the 18th of September.

The Reaction

In a recent press conference, Barcelona head manager Hansi Flick did not aim to hide his frustration as he stated, "Lamine Yamal will not be available. He went with the national team in pain and did not train. They gave him painkillers to play. They had at least a three-goal lead in every match, and he played 73 minutes and 79, and between matches he couldn't train. This is not taking care of the player. I am very sad about this" (Goal).

The Spanish Football Federation quickly pushed back against this response, insisting that Yamal arrived to camp fit and that they had not received a notice from Barça's medical staff regarding any injury. Additionally, they pointed a finger at Fernando Galán (physio who works with both Barça and Spain), stating that he had not reported any issues with the player (Barca Blaugranes).

This tense dispute has escalated into a wider debate about the responsibilities of clubs and national teams to protect their young talent. With memories of Pedri's overuse still present, many fear that these kinds of careless actions will lead to a similar situation. For now, Barça fans are left anxious about the near-future, especially with Barça already trailing Real Madrid by 5 points in the league, that losing Lamine Yamal may hinder their start to the season even further.
